Be the Church Neighborhood Impact is a Spirit-led movement of neighborhood transformation that encourages the local church to be Christlike neighbors. The idea is that we would not simply go to church once or twice a week, but instead that we would “Be the Church” in the neighborhoods surrounding our church buildings. Be the Church Neighborhood Impact is part of the IMPACT team at Colonial, and we minister alongside of low-income neighbors in and around the Center School District. Our hope is to build bridges between the local church, the local school district, and the surrounding neighborhoods by establishing supportive, Christ-centered relationships with neighborhood children, youth and families.
Our primary focus is ministering at block of duplexes called Holmes Gardens. Our church has rented space there, and three college-age guys from our church live there as our on-the-ground incarnational presence. The neighborhood kids affectionately refer to this duplex as the “church.” They call it that because the people who come and serve them are from our church.
Our weekly programs include Discovery Bible Studies, after-school tutoring, one-on-one mentoring, and Lead to Read. We also host special events such as block parties, serve days, Turkey Bowl, back-to-school snacks, basketball tournaments, community cookouts, and more. In addition, we provide transportation for neighborhood kids and families to attend church activities at our Wornall campus on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. Some of these programs and events are hosted at Holmes Gardens, some at Colonial Presbyterian Church, and some at a local school or park.
Finally, we are a collaborative ministry, having established ongoing partnerships with Colonial’s Children's and Student Ministries, Colonial’s Food Pantry, the Center School District, Parents as Teachers, Indian Creek Elementary School, Boone Elementary School, My Father’s House, Mission Southside, Freedom Fire, and the Scott Schwaller Memorial Fund for “At-Risk” Youth.
